Fergus Falls scored a pair of goals in each of the first two periods on Tuesday night to take a 4-1 lead at the second intermission.  They added three third period goals for a 7-2 win over New Ulm in the opening round of the Fergus Falls Holiday Hockey Classic.  The Otters had 40 shots on goal in the game and Otter goalie Ben Swanson stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced.

“A good win to start off the Holiday Classic,” stated Fergus Falls Head Coach Mike Donaghue.  “It was a solid team effort from the start of the game.  Michael DeBrito, Isaac Johnson and Carter Thielke all had strong games, moving the puck well and creating lot of opportunities.  Colin Becker scored his first varsity goal for our first goal of the game and that got us going.”

Becker’s goal at 3:21 of the first period was setup by Jax Kanzenmeyer and Shane Zierden.  DeBrito added a goal at 16:35 with Johnson and Thielke assisting.

In the second period Johnson scored 39 seconds in, from Thielke and DeBrito.  New Ulm scored at 6:19 as Josh Gulden found the back of the net off an assist from Luke Steffensmeier.  The Otters increased their lead to 4-1 on Kellen Stenstrom’s goal at 10:39. Cole Zierden had an assist on the goal.

Twenty-eight seconds into the third period Thielke scored from Johnson and DeBrito.  Johnson got his second of the game at 4:59 with DeBrito and Thielke picking up assists.  New Ulm notched their final goal at 8:18 when Jack Albrecht scored, unassisted.  The Otters final goal came from Thielke, who was assisted by Cole Wentworth at 9:23.

Fergus Falls (8-2) will host Kittson County Central on Wednesday at 4:00pm.
