Stifling defense and a second half surge helped the Perham Yellowjackets boys’ basketball team to cruise to a 66-47 season-opening win over the Aitkin Gobblers on Thursday, December 2 at the Hive.

The Yellowjackets used a balanced offensive attack with four players finishing in double digits in their 19-point home win. The victory extended the Yellowjackets home winning streak to 63 straight home wins, including 41 at the Hive, where the Yellowjackets are still undefeated.

Aitkin was able to hit some key 3-pointers in the first half to stick with the Yellowjackets. However, Perham clamped down on the Gobblers in the second half, forcing the Gobblers into taking shots with bad looks at the basket.

Gus Sanford led the charge for the Gobblers with 16 points, while Landon Janzen added 12 points.

The Yellowjackets were led in scoring by Soren Anderson. The junior guard finished with 22 points on nine of 15 shooting from the field. He grabbed five rebounds for the Yellowjackets.

Micah Thompson was seven of nine from the field for 17 points. He recorded a double-double as he was all over the glass with 11 rebounds to go with his 17 points.

Alex Ohm finished with 12 points on six of seven shooting. Jacob Daniels added 11 points as he hit on four of seven.

The Yellowjackets held a 29-23 edge on the boards and were seven of 11 at the free throw line. The Yellowjackets forced the Gobblers into 16 turnovers and committed just eight in their season-opening win.

Next up for the Yellowjackets is a conference clash with Barnesville in Barnesville on December 10. The Yellowjackets return home on December 11 when they host Holy Family Catholic at 3 p.m.
