Knights Come Up One Point Short in Class AA Title Game

Anthony Sykora was stopped short of the end zone on a two-point conversion run with 6:14 remaining in the Class AA Championship game on Friday afternoon at US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis as the Chatfield Gophers held on for a 14-13 victory over the West Central Area/Ashby Knights.

West Central Area/Ashby fell behind 6-0 when Parker Delaney scored on a 6 yard run with 7:21 left in the opening quarter.  The Knights pulled even with 4:11 to go in the quarter when Cole Anderson hauled in a 30 yard TD pass from Evan Paulson, capping an 8-play, 68-yard scoring drive.  The extra point kick by Paulson gave WCA/Ashby a 7-6 lead.

A 31-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Carter Daniels and a two-point conversion pass from Drew O’Connor to Grady Schott with just fifty-six seconds remaining in the half gave the Gophers a 14-7 halftime lead.

The Knights were successful on a 12-play, 76-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter when Paulson’s 1 yard run pulled them to within a point at 14-13.  Head Coach Nate Wood decided to roll the dice and go for the win, however, the Gophers defended the two-point run successfully and prevailed by the 14-13 score to finish at 13-1 on the season.  With the lost the Knights end the year 11-2.

Chatfield ran for 143 yards and passed for 67, giving them 210 yards of total offense.  The Knights finished with 68 rushing yards and 221 yards passing, for 289 total yards.  Both teams recorded 12 first downs.  The Knights had 5 turnovers in the game and struggled on their third down conversions as they were successful on only 3-of-13 tries.  Chatfield had two turnovers and went 2-for-10 on third down conversion attempts.

Individual leaders for the Gophers were Kailan Schott (10 carries, 71 yards), Delaney (13 carries, 35 yards, TD, 5 completions, 13 attempts, 67 yards) and Grady Schott (1 reception, 31 yards).  Defensively, Daniels had 11 tackles, a pair of fumble recoveries and a pass breakup), Isaac Erding had two interceptions and Eli Hopp picked off a pass.  Campbell Berge recorded the only sack of the game.

Defensive leaders for the Knights were Hunter Norby (8 tackles, 1 interception, 1 pass breakup) and Nasir Dotts-Wakeemup (6 tackles, I interception).  Offensively they were led by Paulson (15 completions, 29 attempts, 203 yards, 1 TD), Norby (4 catches, 71 yards), Anderson (4 catches 67 yards, TD), Hoff (4 receptions, 33 yards) and Sykora (21 carries, 63 yards, 3 receptions, 33 yards).
