Blades and Lakers Combine for 17 Goals as Breck-Wahp Opens with 9-8 Win

Reagan Wohlers scored four goals and added a pair of assists as the Breckenridge-Wahpeton Blades won their first ever varsity girls’ hockey game on Tuesday night, beating Detroit Lakes by the score of 9-8 on the Lakers home ice. Emma Coley led DL with 4 goals and two assists in the game.

The Lakers scored just 31 seconds into the game as Coley setup Haley Stattelman.  Breck-Wahp then scored the next four goals as Lily Beyer (1:48) and Reagan Wohlers (4:15) tallied unassisted goals, followed by an Anabel Pausch goal from Reagan Wohlers at 9:5 and Wohlers second of the period at 13:54 on the power play.  Detroit Lakes cut the lead to 4-3 with a pair of shorthanded goals by Emma Coley.  The first at 15:23 was unassisted and the second at 16:06 was assisted by Stattelman and Kaydence Thorsteinson.

The Blades built their lead to 7-3 in the second period.  Kennedy Schuler scored from Wohlers and Britta Pausch at 5:09, followed by an Ashlyn Wohlers goal from Riley Finkral at 7:46 and a goal from Karsyn Neppl, assisted by Ivy Ovsak at 1:02.  Detroit Lakes made it 7-5 with goals from Thorsteinson, assisted by Coley at 12:31 of the period, and an unassisted tally by Coley at 13:21.  Breck-Wahp increased their lead to 8-5 at 16:11 on another power play goal by Reagan Wohlers, setup by Ovsak.

Ovsak earned the playmaker with her third assist of the night on the Blades final goal of the game just 31 seconds into the third period as Reagan Wohlers recorded her fourth goal for a 9-5 lead.  DL made it close with unassisted goals from Coley at 4:42 and Ella Larson at 9:08 and another goal at 14:11 from Stattelman, assisted by Brynn Erickson, leaving them one goal short.

Kolle Schuler made 22 saves for Brekenridge-Wahpeton and the Blades had 38 shots on goal with Laker goalie Emma Wahl coming up with 29 stops.
