The Chatfield Gophers overcame an 18-8 third quarter deficit to beat the Barnesville Trojans 22-18 on Thursday afternoon in the Class AA Semifinals at US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis.  The Gophers notched the winning touchdown with just 2:21 remaining in the fourth quarter and will now play for the Class AA title at 1:00pm Friday, November 26 at US Bank.

Barnesville took a 6-0 lead as they went 58 yards on 11 plays on the first possession of the game and found the end zone on a 16 yard pass from Noah Krause to Braeden Bredman.  The two-point attempt failed.  The Trojans forced a punt and took possession of the ball at their own 26 yard line.  On the second play from scrimmage Krause broke loose for a 70 yard TD run, giving Barnesville a 12-0 lead.

Chatfield went 65 yards in 15 plays and scored on a 3 yard run by Sam Backer with 9:39 left in the first half.  Backer then hit Luke Carrier with the two-point conversion pass, cutting the Trojans lead to 12-8.  Neither team scored the rest of the half.

Barnesville recovered a fumble at the Chatfield 15 yard line on the Gophers first possession of the second half and on their first offensive snap the Trojans scored on a 15 yard run by Bredman, increasing their lead to 18-8.  Barnesville again failed to convert the two-point try.  Chatfield responded with an 8-play, 74 yard scoring drive which resulted in a 32 yard pass from Parker Delaney to Isaac Erding, making the score 18-14 with 4:29 remaining in the third quarter.

Chatfield took possession of the football following a Barnesville punt with 3:06 to go at their own 37 yard line.  After crossing midfield on a 16 yard pass completion, the Gophers struck on a third down and ten pass that covered 47 yards from Delaney to Carrier for the go ahead score with just 2:21 left in the game.  The two-point pass from Delaney to Drew O’Connor gave the Gophers a 22-18 lead.  The Trojans then fumbled the ensuing kick-off, however, Barnesville got the ball back and had started their possession on their 20 yard line, but on the third play from scrimmage an interception ended their chance.

"I felt we played very well throughout the game, but it was a could of would of should of kind of game," said Barnesville Head Coach Bryan Strand. "We lost a couple kids during the game that hurt bad when they went out. Peyton Pauna went out in the first half with a knee injury and he had been playing a great corner for us lately, and was having a fantastic game. Tim Wells went down in the 2nd half with a knee injury and had been having one of his best games on O and D, then Spencer Schumacher who came in for Tim, ended up with a concussion in the fourth quarter."

Chatfield was held to just 67 rushing yards, but had 201 yards through the air for a total offense figure of 268 yards on 68 snaps.  Barnesville finished with 223 yards (205 rushing, 18 passing) on 50 offensive plays.  Barnesville turned the ball over 4 times and the Gophers had 2 turnovers.

"The boys worked their tails off last week, and for that matter the entire year," added Coach Strand. "We prepared for a running QB and basically shut them down with him in there.  He had rushed for over 2300 yards, 40 TD's and passed for a bunch, and we had held him while he was in there for 2 quarters and a little of the 2nd half, before he was ejected, to 74 rushing yards on 19 carries (3.9 yards a carry) and he was 1/8 passing for 3 yards. Then he goes out and they basically go to all passing but again were 5/19 passing but the passes they hit hurt us.  The kids prepared so much and really played an outstanding game vs an opponent that struggled heavily in sportsmanship and clean play.  Our kids kept their cool the entire game.  We struggled at times with their speed up front when we were on offense, they were doing a nice job in mixing things up and when the QB left the game I think it elevated their play on D."

Krause led the Trojans with 82 rushing yards on 10 carries and John Roller finished with 57 yards on 7 attempts.  Bredman caught both completions for 18 yards as Krause was 2-for-7 throwing the ball.  Ethan Larson led the defensive effort with 10 total tackles, 9 unassisted.

Backer was the rushing leader for Chatfield with 69 yards on 16 carries.  Delaney completed 7-of-17 passes for 175 yards and 2 scores.  Carrier (3 catches, 72 yards) and Cole Johnson (3 receptions, 71 yards) were the top receivers for the Gophers.

"We had a great year and I was very fortunate to coach a great group of kids again," stated Coach Strand. "They have worked so hard in the weight room and are a group of class who I love being around each and every day.  We do lose 7 seniors to graduation, all 7 of these kids have worked hard and have given so much to this program, I truly can't say enough about them.  Again it was a great year, wish we would of had one more week.  The Barnesville community once again did a great job of supporting the boys, this is an awesome community to be a part of.  Thanks also to all my coaches who have put in countless hours over the past two weeks getting our kids prepared on our opponents, they are a great group and deserve a ton of respect for what they all do."

Barnesville ends the season with a record of 9-3.
