Warriors Capitalize on 5 Verndale Turnovers to Advance to State Quarterfinals

The Wheaton/Herman-Norcross football team is headed to the Class 9-Man state quarterfinals.  The Warriors advanced with a 14-12 victory over the Verndale Pirates on Friday morning at the Fargodome, capturing the Section 4 9-Man championship.

The Warriors scored on an 84 yard drive in the first quarter.  Bryant Callenius went 74 yards with a pass from Zach Braaten to setup a 2 yard TD run by Jarred Ehlers with 7:28 left in the quarter.  Tim Blume ran the ball in for the two-point conversion and Wheaton/Herman-Norcross led 8-0.

The Pirates cut the lead to 8-6 on a 4 yard touchdown run by Gideon Ervasti with 2:25 remaining in the first half.  Verndale failed to convert their extra point try.

The Pirates took their only lead of the game on a 65 yard pass from Dilan Orlando to Brandon Greenwaldt with just under ten minutes left in the third quarter, taking a 12-8 lead.

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross then went 93 yards in 7 plays, regaining the lead on a 28 yard pass to Clint Determan from Marshall Tolifson with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter.  The 14-12 lead stood up through the rest of the game.

Verndale had 5 turnovers in the game with Determan coming up with two picks and Brayden Hofer a third interception.  Nathan Johnson and Jack Siegel each recovered a fumble and Joe Krenz had a sack to lead the Warriors on the defensive side of the ball.

The Warriors had 163 passing yards and 101 rushing yards for a total of 264 yards in the game.  Ehlers ran for 77 yards on 16 carries and Callenius had 3 catches for 84 yards.  Determan had two receptions for 53 yards.  Tolifson completed 5-of-7 passes for 63 yards and Braaten was 5-for-16 for 101 yards.

Verndale finished with 348 (170 passing, 178 rush) total yards on the day.  Ervasti had 28 rushing attempts for 139 yards.  He also had a fumble recovery on defense.  Orlando completed 7-of-16 passes for 151 yards and Greenwaldt was the leading receiver with 3 catches for 138 yards.  Reese Thompson came up with an interception.
