The Fergus Falls boys’ cross country team turned in a valiant effort at the Section 8AA meet on Thursday in Alexandria, but came up six points short of qualifying for the State Meet, finishing fourth with 96 points.  The event was won by Willmar with 71 points and the other state qualifying team is Pequot Lakes, finishing as runner-up with 90 points.  Alexandria edged out the Otters for third place by one point, finishing with a score of 95.  The Otters did qualify Jaden Miller (17:25.2) individually, as he finished in seventh place.

“This was a very close matchup all around and very exciting and stressful to be a part of,” commented Fergus Falls Head Coach Derek Meyer.  “I know the boys had their hearts set on a state appearance.  To be so close is heartbreaking, but nothing to keep any heads down about.  We had a great all-around team effort and the results show it.  A shining moment out of the experience is that we will have one representative of our team running at the state meet.  Jaden Miller had a perfectly executed race.  He kept with the front pack and never looked back.  It is a remarkable accomplishment at his young age.  His future is bright and will bring his teammates some great experience for next season.”

Jack Welde (18:03.2) just missed qualifying for state as he placed thirteenth.  Luke Schroeder (18:25.4) was 22nd, Logan Bredenberg (18:29.4) 24th and Matthew Tuel (18:40.5) 30th to round out the scoring.  David Ronnevik (18:56.4) and Henry Greenagel (19:02.1) were 41st and 43rd, respectively.

Sully Anez (16:23.8) of Willmar won the individual title with Vincent Kaluza (16:50.9) of Rocori coming in second.  Third place went to Willmar’s Colin O’Farrell (16:56.8), fourth place to Jonathan Krueger (16:59.3) of East Grand Forks and fifth place to Eli Hall (17:09.3) of Pequot Lakes.

Alexandria runners qualifying for state were Joel Brault (17:16.7) in sixth place, Landon Runge (17:37.7) in ninth place and Harrison Greathouse (17:37.9) in tenth place.  Also contributing to the scoring for the Cardinals were Throck Lehmann (18:42.4) in 31st place and Tom Wilmesmeier (18:53.9) in 33rd place.  Nolan Peterson (18:56.0) and Luke Panther (18:58.7) rounded out the Cardinals roster of runners at the Section 8AA meet.
