Underwood and Breckenridge turned in a hard-fought defensive battle in the Section 6A football playoffs on Tuesday night with the Cowboys prevailing in a 7-0 victory.

Alex Sanchez scored the only touchdown of the game, scoring on a 6 yard run with 3:38 left in the first quarter.  A Bailey Evans extra-point kick gave the Cowboys a 7-0 lead, which held up the rest of the night.

Statistically, the teams were very even with Underwood recording 151 yards (all rushing) and Breckenridge 155 (8 passing, 147 rushing) total yards.

Cameron Nieto (15 carries, 78 yards) and James Mertes (19 carries, 55 yards) were the top rushers for the Cowboys.  Gavin Pederson had the only reception for 8 yards.  In addition to scoring the only TD of the night, Sanchez also had the game’s only interception.  Alex Tschakert (6 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle) and Landon Blaufuss (5 solo tackles) were the leading tacklers for Breckenridge.

Tristan Evavold led the Rockets with 13 tackles (11 solo, 4 assisted).  He also had a game high 93 yards on 12 carries.  Brien Poser finished with 42 yards on 14 carries.

“Both teams played well enough to win this game, it was an exciting battle,” said Underwood Head Coach Ryan Hendrickson.  “We gave ourselves a good chance to be victorious but were unable to score when we had our opportunities.  I feel for our seniors that left it all on the Breck Field, they have a lot to be proud of.  One of the greatest things I will take from this season was accomplishing/fulfilling one of our biggest team goals of having zero ineligible players, for any reason whatsoever, all season long! When we dropped down to a 20 man roster we thought that it would be really important to have all 20 guys eligible all season, and we did; I think that is pretty awesome. I want to thank our Underwood Community for another great season, the support and atmosphere was amazing!”
