A 21 yard Carter Thielke to Luke Newman touchdown pass with six seconds to go in the game capped a 95 yard scoring drive and lifted the Fergus Falls football team to a thrilling 30-23 victory over East Grand Forks on Wednesday night at the Otter Stadium Field.  Fergus Falls ends the regular season with a 6-2 record and should receive the number two seed in Section 8AAA.

Thielke completed 13-of-19 passes for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Newman on the night.  Newman caught 5 passes for 128 yards.  Thielke also led the rushing attack with 55 yards on 14 carries.

East Grand Forks got on the board early in the game when a snap sailed over the head of the Otter punter and into the end zone for a safety.  Green Wave quarterback Tanner Campos then scored on a 6 yard run and Justin Overgaard booted the extra-point for a 9-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Thielke scored the first Otter TD on a 24 yard run and Jaydon Manteufel added the PAT kick to cut the Green Wave lead to 9-7.  Overgaard’s 30 yard TD run on a fourth and one play made the score 15-7.  Griffin Babolian cut the halftime lead to 15-13 with a 13 yard run.  The Otters failed to convert on their two-point try.

A 27 yard field goal by Manteufel gave the Otters their first lead at 16-15 in the third quarter.  Following a Thielke interception in the fourth quarter, the Otters scored on the first play of the possession when Thielke connected with Newman on a 61 yard TD pass, increasing their lead to 23-15 after a Manteufel extra point.  Caleb Schmiedeberg broke free for a 30 yard touchdown run and then ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 23-23.  The winning drive started at the Otter 5 yard line with 1:26 remaining, after a punt by the Green Wave.  Jonah Sorum had a key reception and Cole Zierden caught two important passes on the drive.

Fergus Falls had 363 yards of offense (123 rushing, 240 passing) and East Grand Forks had 323 yards.

Section seedings and quarterfinal round pairings will be announced on Thursday.
