The Pelican Rapids volleyball team traveled to Frazee for their final Heart O’ Lakes Conference match of the season on Tuesday night.  The Vikings were coming off a long trip to Staples the night before and knew they had to bring the energy and right away against the Hornets.  The two teams battled through five sets before the Hornets prevailed 3-2 (25-23, 15-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9).

“We started the night a little shaky and had a hard time getting into a rhythm offensively,” noted Pelican Rapids Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “We made a few hitting and blocking errors out of the gate and had some trouble defending their off-paced balls in the middle of the court.  We came out more aggressive in the second set and passed the ball very well to give setter Sophia Paulson (38 set assists) lots of options.  We controlled that set from the start and brought the same confidence into the third set.  Ellie Welch (10 kills) and Kelsey Isaman (11 kills) had 4 and 6 consecutive kills, respectively, in the third set to carry us to a 2-1 lead.  The Hornets changed up their game plan and attacked out of the right side to grab an early lead as they bounced back to win, tying the match at 2 sets apiece.  Too many hitting errors in the fifth set gave them too many unearned points and we did not play aggressive enough at the net in crunch time.”

Leaders for the Vikings were Tori Stephenson (11 kills, 20 digs, 1 ace), Morgan Korf (34 digs, 1 ace), Welch (10 kills, 1.5 block kills), Isaman (11 kills, 18 digs), Anna Roisum (9 kills, 1 block kill) and Hazel Haugrud (2 aces, 11 digs).
