It took two scoreless overtime periods and a shootout to end the Pelican Rapids boys’ soccer season.  The Vikings lost 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout with St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday night in Sauk Centre.  The Crusaders won the Section 8A title and will advance to the Class A State Boys Soccer Tournament which begins next week.  The Vikings end their season 11-5-1.

Following a scoreless first half the Vikings took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Sebastian Centeno with 13:44 remaining in the second half.  Cathedral pulled even when Zachary Plante notched a goal with just over three minutes to play.

In the shootout Jesus Moreno scored for Pelican Rapids on the first opportunity for the Vikings.  In the second round, Connor Drong brought the Crusaders even at a goal apiece.  A Lucas Hanson goal in the third round made it 2-1.  Mohamed Ahmed’s goal to start round four put the score at 2-2, but Chandler Hendricks gave Cathedral a 3-2 edge sending the shootout to the final round with Pelican Rapids needing a goal.  Centeno was stopped by goalkeeper Palmer Minette and Cathedral had the win.
