Nuggets Run for 418 Yards in 48-20 Win Over Cowboys

The Hawley Nuggets scored on their first five possessions of the game on Friday night as they built a 35-7 halftime lead in Breckenridge and went on to post a 48-20 victory over the Cowboys.  Hawley had 418 yards of total offense, all of which came on the ground.  The Nuggets had 22 first downs on the night and did not turn the ball over.

Breckenridge finished with 249 rushing yards and 270 total yards, accumulating 15 first downs in the game, however, the Cowboys also had 3 turnovers.

The first TD of the night came on a 26 yard run by Sam Burkel, giving the Nuggets a 6-0 lead.  Johnny Vetter then carried the ball 47 yards for the second Hawley score and the extra point kick by Burkel put the score at 13-0 after the first quarter.

Burkel took the ball in from 2 yards out early in the second quarter and Derek Tibbetts scored on a two-point conversion attempt for a 21-0 Hawley lead.  Burkel’s 9 yard TD run and extra-point kick pushed the lead to 28-0 and Vetter’s second TD, this time from 5 yards out, was followed by another Burkel PAT kick and a 35-0 lead for the Nuggets.  Breckenridge got on the board when Bailey Evans hit Gavin Pederson with a 6 yard TD pass and Evans booted the extra point for a 35-7 halftime score.

In the third quarter Hawley extended their lead to 42-7 on a 5 yard TD run by Tibbetts and another extra point kick by Burkel.  Breckenridge responded with a 13 yard touchdown run by Cam Nieto, cutting the Hawley lead to 42-13.  Hawley increased the lead to 48-13 on a 4 yard run by Burkel.

The Cowboys notched the final score of the night when Nieto broke loose for a 77 yard TD run.  Evans added the PAT kick for a final of 48-20.

Tibbetts led the Nuggets rushing attack with 144 yards on 10 carries, while Burkel (8 carries, 74 yards and Vetter (4 carries, 69 yards) also contributed strong numbers out of the backfield.  The Nuggets did not attempt a pass.

Breckenridge was led by Cam Nieto’s huge night.  Nieto ran for 225 yards on 22 carries.  Pederson caught two passes for 14 yards.

Breckenridge will close out their regular season schedule at Pelican Rapids at 7:00pm Wednesday, while Hawley plays their final game of the regular season at home against Barnesville.
