Using a strong defensive effort and a pair of goals from Piper Andrews, the Fergus Falls girls’ soccer team defeated Crookston 2-0 on Saturday at Otter Stadium. The backline of the Otters limited the visiting Pirates to minimal opportunities to put the ball in the net. Meanwhile, Fergus had multiple chances in the first half before Andrews broke through at the twenty-nine minute mark after receiving a pass from Tyra Skjeret

That score would hold into the second half, before Andrews once again found the net at the seventy-two minute mark off a feed from Hope Goepferd. The Otters also had two shots hit off the crossbar in the second half, but the defense was more than up to the task.

Rylynn Krein had her second shutout in as many games.

“I am so proud of our girls,” said Head Coach Ben Jurgens of the Otters.  “The game may not have started out the way we planned but the girls regained their composure and settled in and played Otter soccer.  I thought the play of our reserves was as solid as it’s been all year.  They played with confidence and did a fantastic job.  Haley Kugler, Desi Maack and Grace Polejewski, along with our outsides Madi Budke and Ella Starzl.  My assistant coaches did a wonderful job communicating with the girls.”

It was the fourth straight win and shutout for Coach Jurgens' team, who improved to 7-6-4 on the season. They will take on St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday night at 5:30pm in Sauk Centre with a trip to State on the line.  The Crusaders won the other semifinal contest, 3-2 over St. John’s Prep on Saturday afternoon.
