It took 3 overtime sessions for two great football teams to decide a mammoth battle on the gridiron Friday night.  When the dust settled, the Osakis Silverstreaks walked away with an amazing 52-50 win over the Barnesville Trojans.

“It was a game of many ups and downs, and tons of emotions by both teams,” stated Barnesville Head Coach Bryan Strand.  “Osakis was playing for the father of a senior who has stage 4 cancer, #52 Chayce Meyer.  It was learned on Saturday morning via text that this young mans’ father passed away a few hours after the game concluded.  His number in high school was #52, so Chayce decided to take that number at the beginning of this year to honor his father.  Coincidentally, their final point total on this night was also 52.”

Osakis got the scoring started with a Kyle Mages 44 yard TD pass to Tyson Hagedon and a two-point conversion run by Mages.  Noah Krause then connected with Cam Heng on a 10 yard touchdown with Heng also scoring on the two-point conversion run to tie the game at 8-8.  A 8 yard run by Drew Imdieke gave Osakis a 14-8 lead after one quarter.

An 11 yard run by Andrew Pederson pulled Barnesville even at 14-14 early in the second quarter and a 39 yard TD run by Krause made it 20-14 Trojans.  Mages answered with a 39 yard TD pass Bauer Klimek to make it 20-20 and Barnesville closed out the first half with an 11 yard touchdown reception by Kaden Zenzen from Krause.  Krause hooked up with Tate Inniger for the two-point conversion on the last play of the half and the Trojans led 28-20 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, however, Osakis tied the game on a 15 yard TD pass by Mages to Hagedon and a two-point conversion pass from Mages to Klimek.

In the first overtime, Mages connected with Carter Watnaas on a touchdown pass and the two point conversion pass to Hagedon made it 36-28, Osakis.  Barnesville responded with a six yard run by Pederson and a two-point conversion run by Heng to tie the game at 36-36.

The second OT saw Mages deliver another TD pass to Hagedon, followed by a successful conversion run for a 44-36 Osakis lead.  Heng then scored on a five yard run and got in for the two-point conversion to pull the Trojans even at 44-44.

Mages hit Imdieke on a 10 yard scoring toss and then Mages carried the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion to give Osakis a 52-44 advantage.  Barnesville’s Jon Roller scored on a 6 yard run, however, the two-point conversion try failed due to a fumbled pitch, leaving the final score at 52-50.

“We just made too many mistakes again to ever pull away from them,” said Coach Strand.  “We moved the ball well all night and Noah Krause had his best high school game to date, throwing for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while rushing for 152 yards and a score.  He truly stepped up his play tonight and it was evident to everyone there.  Osakis gave up on the run early in the night and was content on passing, and we had guys in coverage and were mostly in the right positions, but we just couldn’t make that big play.  They made some nice adjustments at half and we didn’t find the end zone again until OT.”

Andrew Pederson ran for 86 yards on 13 attempts and Roller had 71 yards on 11 carries.  Zenzen caught 4 passes for 89 yards.  Heng had an interception to lead the defense.  Zenzen had two sacks and was in on 9 tackles, Braeden Bredman had 4 solo tackles and 4 assisted tackles and Wyatt Suter recorded a sack.

“This was truly one of the best high school games I have been a part of, even though we came up short,” added Coach Strand.  “Many guys stepped up.  Logan Yeske, our started DE missed the game as did Austin Bolgrean.  We are also without starting fullback and linebacker Ethan Larson who we could have back by the playoffs, hopefully.  Kaden Zenzen and Jonny Robideau both played outstanding games.  Kaden is showing more and more why he is headed to the Bison next year.  When he wants to he can completely take over a game on both sides of the ball.  Jonny has just been consistent all year.”

The Trojans will play 0-4 Pillager on Friday and then they will host Detroit Lakes in their homecoming game.
