Perham Beats DL on Hook-and-Ladder Play with 14 Seconds Left

Levi Richter scored on the old hook-and-ladder play with 14 seconds remaining to lift the Perham Yellowjackets to a 30-27 victory over Detroit Lakes on Friday night at Ted Meinhover Field on Perham Hall of Fame Induction Night.

DL took the lead with 8:40 left in the first quarter on a 14 yard pass from Bradly Swiers to Mason Carrier.  The touchdown was setup by an interception by Christian SolbergColton Hackel ran the ball in from 17 yards out to tie the game and Colton Hackel’s extra point kick gave Perham a 7-6 lead with 5:38 to play in the opening quarter.  Carrier’s second TD came on a 20 yard run, putting the Lakers in front 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Hackel scored on a 4 yard run with just twelve seconds left in the half and then scored the two point conversion for a 15-12 halftime lead.

Ethan Carrier scored on a 28 yard run and Evan Thomas added the PAT kick to give DL a 19-15 advantage with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter.  The TD capped a 5 play, 74 yard drive.  Hackel’s third touchdown of the night came with 17 second left in the quarter when he broke loose for a 24 yard run putting the final touches on a 6 play, 65 yard scoring drive, putting Perham on top 23-19.

DL regained the lead with 33 seconds left in the game as Swiers scored on a one yard run on the twelfth play of a 68 yard drive and then hit Hunter Korth with a two point conversion pass for a 27-23 lead.  That setup the winning 47 yard score as the Yellowjackets perfectly executed the hook-and-ladder play to improve their season record to 3-1.

Perham ran for 279 yards and had 113 yards passing for a total of 392 yards.  DL ran for 190 yards and had 94 yards passing for 284 total yards.

Hackel had 159 rushing yards on 28 carries and completed 6-of-12 passes for 113 yards and one TD.  Chas Melvin had 62 yards rushing on 3 carries.  Melvin picked off a pass, Ben Shumansky recovered a fumble and Karter Kosowski recorded a sack to lead the Perham defense.  Hudson Hackel and Brian Ramos each had 7 tackles.

Mason Carrier picked up 102 rushing yards on 10 carries to lead the Lakers and Swiers was 10-for-18 throwing the football with Solberg collecting six of the passes for 45 yards.  Jake Pavek had an interception and Gavin Smith had a sack.

Perham will host Fergus Falls next Friday night.
