Verndale dominated the game in the trenches on Thursday night as the Pirates spoiled the home opener and season opener for Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, beating the Comets 48-8 in the rain.

“This was just a rough evening for us,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Korey Fry.  “We were asked multiple times during the day if we should move the game back a day due to weather.  The rain did affect our passing and our plans to spread Verndale out.  They were the better team and will be one of the top teams in the section this year.”

Caden Fischer completed 4 of 21 passes for 64 yards and also ran for 40 yards on 14 carries.  Evan Lindgren scored the only Hillcrest touchdown and finished with 81 rushing yards on 21 attempts.  Joel Bowman was the leading receiver with 3 catches for 63 yards.

Defensive leaders were Fischer (9 tackles), Gavin Knutson (7 tackles), Micah Bermel (7 tackles, 3 tackles for loss) and Lindgren (2 tackles, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery).
