The Barnesville Trojans traveled to East Grand Forks tonight for their second road match of the season. The Trojans started off the night with a B-team win and later a JV win as well. The varsity took the court around 7:30 and kicked off the night behind some strong serving from Katie Newell (19/20, 4 aces) and Anna Stanford (13/14) as they went on to post a 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-22) victory over the Greenwave.

“We took an early 11-1 lead before the Green Wave was able to score on a defensive error by the Trojans,” said Head Coach Megan Askegaard of the Trojans. “We were able to keep up the tough aggressive serving the entire first set followed by great defensive plays that allowed us to keep chipping away to 25. We ran our free sets well and attacked the net with great intensity. We really had to work to create our own momentum tonight and that can get tough on the road. The girls did a nice job staying upbeat and into the action tonight in a quiet gym. In set two we continued to serve tough and shoot the gaps in their serve receive. Our middles were big keys again in our offense tonight and worked hard getting the block closed and attacking. Our defense was solid as we moved our feet well and didn’t give up any free points in set 2. Moving into the third set we found ourselves not being as aggressive as we had been in the first two sets. We made a few errors to start and found ourselves playing from behind early in the set. We trailed at the start and were finally able to tie things back up at 9. EGF was attacking more than we had seen them in the first couple sets and we were back on our heels playing defense. We traded points back and forth until Kenzie Skogen (9/10, 1 ace) came in and served a couple points to give us the lead and we were able to push through to the end of the match.

Newell recorded 31 set assists and the Barnesville attack was led by Emily Bredman with 9 kills.  Emily Smith had 8 kills, Stanford delivered 7 kills and Laruen Halverson added 6 kills.  Bredman had 4 block assists, Halverson had 2 block assists and Smith had a solo block and a block assist.  Dig leaders were Stanford and Sydney Strand with 9 each and Lexi Bolgrean with 8.  Smith was a perfect 12-for-12 on the serving line.
