The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy volleyball team traveled to Pelican Rapids to open their season on Thursday night and returned home with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-20) victory over the lady Vikings.

Hope Adams (13 kills, 15/15 serving, 3 digs), Anna Brumfield (13 kills, 6 digs, 4 block kills), Ruby Peterson (16/17 serving, 9 digs), Madison Ballweg (10 digs), Henrietta Ruud (36 set assists, 5 digs, 3 kills), Natalie Zwiers (3 kills) and Abby Heikes (9/10 serving, 3 kills, 3 digs) led the Comets on the court.

We are off to an exciting start,” exclaimed Head Coach Debi Foss.  “The girls were pumped to finally compete against another team. A lot of things went in our favor tonight against the Vikings. Our middles did a good job of attacking the ball and finding the holes. Henrietta Ruud ran our offense tonight and did a nice job of getting the ball to our hitters. Madison Ballweg lead the team with ten digs followed by Ruby Peterson with nine. Our passing also showed some growth from past seasons. Like everyone else, we’ve got some things to work on next week but I’m confident in the girls’ abilities and their love of the game.  I’m most proud of the team unity we experienced tonight. Due to an injury for Madi Foss just before game departure, we had to make some last minute changes to the rotation. The girls pulled together perfectly. The overall growth I have seen in the past few months is pretty exciting to be a part of.  We will head to Underwood next Thursday for our next match.”

Pelican Rapids was led by Kelsey Isaman (7 kills, 8 digs), Tori Stephenson (6 kills, 2 digs), Ellie Welch (6 kills, 1 block kill), Anna Roisum (6 kills), Hazel Haugrud (10 digs), Morgan Korf (2 kills, 4 digs, 6 assists) and Sophia Paulson (10 assists).

“We were very excited to be back in our home gym with a great group of fans in the stands,” said Vikings Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “With a lot of excitement and nerves we had a harder time tonight getting ourselves into a rhythm.  The Comets brought a lot of power from the front row and our blocking struggled a bit tonight with some execution errors and net violations.”

The Vikings will host their first conference match against Barnesville on Thursday, September 9th and then will host the Pelican Rapids Invitational on Saturday, September 11.

Hillcrest is back in action on Thursday at Underwood and will be one of the teams participating in the Pelican Rapids Invitational on September 11.
