The New York Mills football team shutout Red Lake 43-0 in their season opener on Thursday night.  “A big win to start the year off for us,” said Head Coach Matt Radniecki of the Eagles.  “We did what we were supposed to do and came out on the first three plays on offense and scored.  Our defense was outstanding all night long and we got a pick six by Jonah Ruther for our last score.  It was a good start for us as we were able to play everyone and give them quality time in a varsity game.”

The Eagles scored four first quarter touchdowns, starting with a 46 yard run from Ethan RutherBren Salo then hit Jonah Johnson with a 29 yard scoring toss, and Brayden Ehnert added an extra point kick to put the Eagles lead at 13-0.  Dane Niemi ran the ball in from 12 yards out and Guck scored on a 41-yard run to increase the lead to 25-0 after one quarter.

Jonah Ruther scored a pair of second quarter TD’s on runs of 6 and 7 yards, putting the halftime lead at 37-0.

Jonah Ruther added a third quarter touchdown on a 53 yard interception return.

“A great game in that we got to play the younger guys on offense and defense giving them a chance to play in a varsity game,” said New York Mills Head Coach Matt Radniecki.  “I was especially happy that we took care of the ball for the most part and also did a nice job of eliminating mistakes and penalties.  Our older kids did what they needed to do and we set the tone early and did what we expected to do.  I was very happy with how everyone played and we worked together as a team.  We travel to Walker to play on Friday in a Section contest for us.  This will be a big game for our team.”
