The M State Men’s Golf Team is coming off a tremendous season where they finished third in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament and had the individual National Champion, Wyatt Blomseth, along with fellow first team All-American Carter Justesen.  Losing those two golfers, along with John Vall, to graduation, will open up opportunities for returning golfers and golfers new to the team in 2021.

Grant Inniger, a second team All-American from Barnesville, Hunter Burnside, an All-American Honorable Mention golfer from Detroit Lakes and Mikey Vall, a Hillcrest Lutheran Academy graduate, are all back from last season.

Newcomers to the team include 2021 Minnesota Class A State Tournament qualifier Joel Quam from Hillcrest, Jordan Caspers from Fargo and Sam Western from Fergus Falls.

“Our men’s team will have great potential to improve throughout the fall and into the spring,” said Head Coach Jason Retzlaff.  “We have some newcomers with a lot of ability that will improve as they gain experience.  Our three returners in Hunter, Grant and Mikey, gives us a solid foundation that we hope to build on.”

Sara Butler is the lone returning golfer on the women’s side for M State and she will be joined by Hillcrest grad Audra Ewan, a 2021 Minnesota Class A State Golf Tournament qualifier.

“This has the potential to be a very nice building season for our women’s program,” noted Coach Retzlaff.  “We are thrilled to have Audra join our team after an outstanding high school career at Hillcrest.  Sara has also returned and has already shown increased confidence in her game.”

Retzlaff says Southwest Tech from Wisconsin is the men’s favorite in Region XIII, while Minnesota West from Worthington in the top team in the women’s division.

Jeff Haukos returns for his 17th season as an assistant to Retzlaff, who is in his eighteenth year as head coach.
