The Pelican Rapids cross country teams competed at the Brave Like Gabe Meet hosted by Perham on Saturday, August 28. “The first meet is a great opportunity to see how the first couple of weeks of training have progressed,” commented Coach Laura Januszewski of the Vikings. “We ran a time trial a week prior to that. Seven of our student-athletes had faster average mile splits in their race than they had in their time trial. This a big sign of progress!”

Junior Sylvia Pesch was the top runner on the girls' side with a time of 22:50, good for a top 50 individual finish. On the boys' side, freshman Charlie Larson led his teammates with a 13th place individual finish. Running in his first varsity race, seventh grader Grady Larson finished 40th overall. As a team, the boys placed 13th out of 17 teams and the girls placed 15th out of 16 teams.

Most improved honors for the meet go to Philip Kleinschmidt and Megan Guler, both seventh graders. Kleinschmidt took more than six minutes off his time trial time and Guler dropped more than 20 seconds off her average pace.
