Fergus Canes advance to State Class C Tourney as Region 16 Runner Up

The Fergus Falls Hurricanes have advanced to the State Class C Amateur Baseball Tournament as the runners-up in Region 16.  After winning their state qualifying game 15-6 over the Urbank Bombers, the Canes dropped a 20-12 slugfest to the Alexandria Black Sox in the state seeding game.  Fergus Falls will play the Hanska Lakers on Sunday, August 22 at 1:30pm in Waconia in the first round of the tournament, while Alexandria plays the winner of the game between Union Hill and Kimball at 4:30pm on August 28 in a second round game, also in Waconia.

In the win over Urbank on Saturday, Mitch Porter (5IP, 10K, 4BB, 4H, 6ER) improved his season record to 8-1 by earning the win.  Eric Salveson (4IP, 6K, 2BB, 0H) was magnificent out of the bullpen, earning a 4-inning save.  Sean McGuire (4-6, 2R), Alex Hensch (3-5, 3R), Darin Stanislawski (3-5, 2R, 2HR, 5RBI) and Alex Hexum (3-5, 3R, 2B, HR, 3RBI) led the 20-hit attack by the Canes.

Leaders for Urbank were Alex Koep (2-5, 2R, HR, RBI) and Austin Hadley (1-4, HR, 4RBI).  The loss went to Levi Arnold (2IP, 1K, 2BB, 5H, 2ER).

Although the Canes collected 20 hits in the loss to Alexandria, they stranded 13 base runners.  The Black Sox had 19 hits and left 12 on base.  Matthew Carlsen (3-6, 4R, HR, 3RBI), Mitch Thompson (3-6, 3R, 2 2B, RBI), Travis Krueger (4-5, 2R, 3RBI), Eric Carlsen (3-4, 3R, 2B, HR, 6RBI) and Blake Stockert (2-5, 5RBI) all had productive days at the plate for the Black Sox.

Offensive leaders for the Canes were McGuire (2-5, 3R, 2B, RBI), Hensch (3-5, 2R), Stanislawski (3-6, R, 2B, 2RBI) and Carter Thielke (4-6, 3R, 2B, RBI). 

The Canes drafted Shane Trattles, a right-handed pitcher from Sauk Center, Alex Koep, a left-handed pitcher from Urbank/Parkers Prairie, and Eric Hinnenkamp, a right-handed pitcher from Long Prairie for their State Tournament roster.
