Matt Morstad, 1995 Fergus Falls High School graduate, was inducted into the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce Sports Hall of Fame (Class of 2021) Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Pebble Lake Golf Course in Fergus Falls.

Matt Morstad, a 1995 graduate of Fergus Falls High School, earned 11 varsity letters in football, swimming and golf.

He started playing varsity golf as a sixth grader, later lettering six years from 7th grade to 12th grade. Morstad lettered from 9th grade to 12th grade in swimming and earned a football letter one year.

“My highest accomplishments came in golf,” he said.

Morstad placed fifth at state as an individual golfer in 1993. That same year the Otter boys golf team took second at state.

He went on to play golf at Division I Marquette University in Milwaukee where he lettered in golf all four years, making the all-conference academic golf team in 1997.

Morstad is proud of his many golf accomplishments at Fergus Falls High School.

He ranked in the top 10 in the state his sophomore, junior and senior years. In 1994 he was part of the MGA Team state championship, and was fifth individually. He was MGA medalist at Hazeltine, Northland and Majestic Oaks.

As a swimmer for the Otters he made two state tournament appearances, in 1993 and 1994. Morstad was co-captain for the Otter swim team in 1995, his senior year.

In Fergus Falls football he played wide receiver and running back, lettering as a junior for the Otter varsity team. Unfortunately he sustained broken ribs mid-season.

Morstad, in the weight room, held school records in the 140-150 weight class for squat. In 1995 he attained Lifter of the Year honors.

He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class at Fergus Falls High School. Morstad was treasurer of the student council in 1994-95 and was a member of the Drama Club, Yearbook Committee and served as Homecoming Emcee.

In college at Marquette he completed his Mechanical Engineering Degree in 3.5 years, obtained his MBA from Arizona State University and subsequently spent most of his career at Honeywell and Axon.

In 1998, at Marquette, Morstad published a paper in applied mathematics as part of a senior independent study. Solved analytically was a value problem with physical application in combustion stability of solid rocket motors.

Matt currently holds a Senior Vice President role with Axon, a Scottsdale, Arizona-based company which develops technology for military, law enforcement and civilians. Morstad brought committees together to pioneer body camera expansion into law enforcement.

He developed the most popular law enforcement body camera in the world, featured on the cover of “Bloomberg Businessweek” in July 2016.  A year later he developed the industry leading in-car Axon video system.

Morstad holds multiple patents for developing auto-activation technology that ensures critical moments such as using a TASER or drawing a firearm, captured on Axon cameras.

His accomplishments at Axon have been covered in multiple magazines and news outlets. Adoption of Axon products developed by Morstad has driven down crime rates and has improved community and policing relations.

He lives in Phoenix with his wife, Lauren, and sons Will, 10, and Max, 8.
