After an intense competition over two very warm days at Headwaters Golf Club in Park Rapids, the Alexandria girls’ golf team is state bound.  Trailing by 4 shots after the first round on Thursday, the Cardinals responded and completed the competition with a 4 shot victory.  Their winning score was 630 (314-316) and Brainerd was second at 634 (310-324).  Detroit Lakes was third with a 652, followed by Becker 728, Sartell 746, Buffalo 759 and Moorhead 763.

“It was a real roller coaster ride for coaches and spectators that were following the live scoring,” reported Alexandria Head Coach Timothy Zupfer.

Alexandria teammates Cora Larson and Hannah Boraas earned co-medalist honors with two-round totals of 147.  Izzy Olson of Brainerd was third with a 152, followed by McKenna Mallow of Detroit Lakes at 153, Katie Foley of the Warriors at 157 and Lauren Rebrovich of the Cardinals at 161.  Rounding out the top ten were Anna Krieger of Brainerd 162, Laura Syltie of DL 165, Hanna Knoop of DL 165 and Anna Angland of the Warriors 167.

The rest of the Alexandria scoring included a 175 from Aisling O’Connor, a 204 from Rachel Bowen and a 204 from Isabella Hagen.

“This was a very special and emotional day for this group of golfers and their coach,” added Coach Zupfer.  “Four of these players have endured the heartache of finishing 2nd in the section by 1 shot in 2018, 2nd in the section by losing via a 5th score tie-breaker in 2019, and losing a promising season in 2020 to the Covid virus.  I believe this group of players has learned a great deal about perseverance.”
