The Ashby baseball team cruised to a 13-0 victory over Parkers Prairie in their first game of the day on Thursday, but then lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to top-seeded New York Mills in game two.  The loss means the Arrows will have to fight through the losers’ bracket in the double elimination Section 6A Tournament.  Their next game will be at 2:30pm Tuesday against Upsala/Swanville Area.

In game one, Hunter Norby threw a complete game shutout, striking out five, walking one and allowing just one hit in his five innings on the mound.  Ashby secured the victory thanks to a ten-run second inning.  Miles Hoff, Carson Spangler, Torin Olson, Carter Spangler, Norby and Brodie Ecker each drove in runs in the inning.  Ashby also played error-free baseball.

The loss to New York Mills came down to the last play of the game.  With the score knotted up at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Eagles got a run-scoring single from Jace Rudolph to earn the walk-off win.  New York Mills had tied the game with 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.

Derin Gaudette (6.2IP, 4R, 6H, 11K) started on the mound for the Eagles.  Jaden Norby (7IP, 4H, 5R, 6K) took the loss for Ashby.  Torin Olson went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Arrows.  Rudolph had two hits in four at bats to pace the Eagles offensively.

“Great first game but we struggled defensively in game 2,” stated Ashby Head Coach Jared Larson. “However, I was proud of the way our guys battled. Now we just have to take the long road back!”
