In the first game, the Rebels Austin Anderson held Pelican to one hit, a 2 out triple by McHale Korf in the 3rd inning, as the Vikings lost 3-0.  No other Viking reached 2nd base in the game.  Weston Funk took the loss, despite only giving up 5 hits and 2 earned runs.  DGF got a run in the first but further damaged was avoided on a fine throw from right fielder, Peyton Blakeway, cutting down a runner at the plate, trying to score from 2nd on a single.  The Rebels scored their final runs in the 5th on a couple of hits and a Pelican error.  Defensively, we played maybe our best game of the year but we couldn’t get our bats going. 

Pelican lost the 2nd game in heartbreak fashion 6-4.  The Vikings led 4-2 going into the 7th and it appeared to have the game won until a 2 out infield pop up was dropped allowing the tying run to score.  The go ahead run scored on a balk to the next batter.  Luke Sjolie started the game on the mound for the Vikings and pitched an excellent game, until tiring in the 7th.  He was relieved by Carson McNeal who took the loss.  Timmy Guler pitched to one batter and got the final out, stopping any further damage.  Pelican scored a run in the 2nd inning on Weston Funk’s single, walks to Luke Sjolie and Peyton Blakeway and an error on Justin Verdorn’s grounder.  The Vikings added 3 more in the 3rd on base hits by Brock Sjolie, Logan Fahje and Blakeway, sandwiched around a walk to Funk.  Two dropped third strikes resulted in DGF scoring twice in the 4th on only one hit.  Pelican threatened to add to their lead in the 5th.  Brock Sjolie led off with a walk, Funk singled, his 2nd hit of the game, and everyone was safe when Fahje’s bunt was misplayed but some poor base running resulted in an out at the plate leaving the score at 4-2.  In the fateful 7th, the Rebels scored 4 times on 2 hits, 3 walks, a hit batter and 2 balks. 

“It was a painful way to end the regular season as we felt we gave this game away,” commented Pelican Rapids Assistant Coach Steve Babb.  “As clean as we played in the first game, the 2nd game was the opposite as we committed 5 errors and had numerous other mistakes.  The good thing is it didn’t affect our ranking as we head into playoffs, beginning Tuesday, June 1 against Breckenridge at 5:00 pm in Perham.”
