The Hillcrest Comets baseball team lost two games at Ortonville on Thursday, falling in game one by the score of 13-3 and losing the nightcap, 12-5.

“We just made too many mistakes on defense and it cost us in game one,” commented Hillcrest Head coach David Weinrich.  “We are improving and have come a long ways this season.  So that’s great to see!”

The Comets were led at the plate by Zayne Weinrich, Micah Bermel and Nate Bermel with 1 hit each.

In game two, starting pitcher Nate Bermel pitched solid for 3 innings and ran into trouble in the 4th. Micah Bermal pitched great for the final 3 1/2 innings of work. “We were much better defensively in game 2,” said Weinrich.  “A lot kids made some great plays for us.  Evan Lindgren at short has been great all year, Zayne Weinrich played a great game in center and Doulton Roise played his best game of the year in left field.”

The Comets were led in hitting by Zayne Weinrich (2 hits), Evan Lindgren (2 hits) and Micah Bermel with 2 hits.  Doulton Roise got his 1st hit of the year on a double to center field.

“Very encouraging effort,” added Coach Weinrich. “Nate Bermel is really stepping up for us as an 8th grader.  Can’t ask much more from him.  He’s been solid all season. We are a young team and continue to work hard to improve. It’s been a tough season but very happy with the kids attitudes and effort.”

Hillcrest will host St John’s prep on Monday.
