After giving up 3 runs in the bottom of the first, the Pelican Rapids Vikings came roaring back with 6 in the 2nd, 5 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th to take a 12-6 lead after 4 innings on their way to a 13-6 win over Staples-Motley on Monday.

Luke Sjolie and his brother Brock led the attack with 3 hits apiece, both of Brock’s hits being doubles.  They also each had 2 RBI’s as did Peyton Blakeway, who got the scoring going with a deep 2 run round tripper to left in the 2nd.  Starting pitcher, Logan Fahje scored 3 times and had one hit.  Others collecting hits were Justin Verdorn, Austin Stoll and McHale Korf.  Korf scored 3 times and had 3 RBI’s.  Fahje pitched 3 innings and gave up 5 runs although only 2 were earned.  He struck out 3 and did not walk a batter.  Verdorn and Brock Sjolie relieved in the 4th with Sjolie getting the win.  Staples came back with 2 in the 6th to bring the score to 12-6 with 2 errors contributing to the damage.  Pelican scored their last run in the top of the 7the without the benefit of a hit.  Weston Funk pitched a clean 7th inning retiring the side in order.  Blakeway made an excellent play, catching a line drive in the gap in right center to start the inning.

“We ran the bases well with some aggressive base running that forced some Staples errors and our pitching overall was good, but the infield committed 4 errors, which resulted in the game being closer than it should have been,” said Pelican Rapids Assistant Coach Steve Babb.

The Vikings travel to Brandon/Evansville on Friday.
