The Ashby softball team scored eight runs in the first two innings of their home game against Rothsay on Monday and went on to post a 9-7 victory over the Tigers.

A two-run homer by Madison Tillman in the top of the first inning gave Rothsay a 2-0 lead, however, Ashby scored three times in the bottom of the first with RBI singles from Anna Thormodson and Livy Johnson, and then added five in the second on a double by Thormodson, a single by Emily Johnson and a stolen base by Ivy Aufdenkamp, while capitalizing on three Rothsay errors in the inning.

“We were able to grab an early lead in our game with multiple hits in the second inning,” said Ashby Head Coach Autumn Flickinger.  “Our big bats in the inning were led by singles by Ryleigh Brendmoen, Johnson and Thormodson.”

Elli Meyer singled and stole two bases in the top of the third as Rothsay cut the Arrows lead to 8-3.  In the fifth the Tigers scored a pair of runs on hits by Kenadi Carlsrud, Meyer and Tillman to trim the Ashby lead to 8-5.  Ashby added a run on a couple of Rothsay errors in the bottom of the fifth, increasing their lead to 9-5.  An RBI single by Carlsrud in the sixth and a solo home run by Tillman in the seventh produced the final two runs of the game.

Madison Bestul (7IP, 7R, 7H, 7K) was the winning pitcher for the Arrows.  Ashby collected 12 hits in the game.  Brendmoen led them with 3 hits in 5 at bats.

“Though Rothsay was a great contender and is aggressive on the bases, we were able to shut them down and keep them from battling back,” noted Flickinger.  “We saw a lot of good things on the field tonight and were able to come up with a win.”
