The Rothsay Tigers trailed Ashby 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning on Tuesday when they pushed across four runs to take an 8-5 lead as they recorded a win in their first varsity game in program history.

“Well we finally got a chance to play our first varsity softball game in school history and I couldn’t be more proud of these girls and their effort tonight,” said Rothsay Head Coach Anita Heier.

Rothsay took a 1-0 lead after one inning as Kenadi Carlsrud scored on a sacrifice fly by Madison Tillman.

Ashby scored 2 runs in the top of the second and the Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI hit by Abby Honer.

Ashby took a 5-2 lead in the 4th inning as Madison Bestul and Anissa Heinrich came through with RBI doubles in the inning.

Rothsay cut into the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the 5th inning with an RBI single by Emma Buckingham.

Hits by Kenadi Carlsrud, Elli Meyer, Madison Tillman and Emma Buckingham contributed to the four run sixth inning.

Katie Reber pitched all 7 innings for Rothsay giving up 5 runs on 9 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.

Ashby banged out 11 hits with Bestul, Ryleigh Brendmoen and Heinrich all collecting multiple hit in the game.  Bestul took the loss in the circle, surrendering 8 runs on 9 hits while striking out six batters.

“This was our first game of the season and it was a pretty cold one at that,” stated Ashby Head Coach Autumn Flickinger.  “Rothsay had some really good moments and with their big sixth innings we did not have enough time to rally back.  A few detrimental errors in the field really cost us.  We look forward to facing them again and hopefully some warmer weather is on the way.”
