The West Central Area boys’ golf team has the highest number of golfers they have had since Kraig Hunter began coaching them fifteen year ago.  Hunter welcomed 28 boys in grades 7 through 12 when practice started in March and with no season a year ago due to COVID19, excitement is high for the 2021 season.

“In 2019 we were young and inexperienced,” said Hunter.  “We have five players returning from our varsity team of 2019.  Even though there wasn’t an official high school season in 2020, they have all played a lot of golf in the past year.  We are expecting a big improvement in our team scores and in our conference standings this year.  We think this will be one of the better teams we’ve had in quite a while.  We also have a couple of others challenging for positions.  Parker Martinson was one of our better JV players in 2019, seventh-grader Marshall Dewey has shown already that he will be in the mix and eighth-grader Samuel Hanson is another first time player that shows potential.”

Returning players include seniors Tate Christenson (All-Conference in 2019) and Grant Beuckens, junior Devin Benson, sophomore Peyton Hanson and ninth-grader Mitch Dewey.

“We will emphasize working a lot on the short game, as well as the mental part of golf and maintaining a positive attitude at all times,” added Coach Hunter, who will be assisted by Ben Johnson (Junior High).

The Knights are in the Quad County Conference, which is comprised of Ashby, Underwood, Hillcrest, Rothsay, OTC, Long Prairie-Browerville, Ortonville, Border West, Pillager and WCA.

They are new to Section 6A this year, moving from 5A.  Coach Hunter said, “Being new to the section, I don’t know a lot about the teams further north, but OTC, Underwood and Hillcrest should all be strong in our conference and section.”
