The Alexandria boys’ basketball team overcame a 13 point second half deficit, ending the game on a 28-13 run and taking a 66-64 victory over Richfield on Thursday afternoon at Target Center.  The win puts the Cardinals into the Saturday night Class AAA title game against Minnehaha Academy.

Trailing 64-61, the Cardinals Myles Sansted was fouled on a three-point attempt.  He made his first two free throws, however, after a Richfield time out he missed his third attempt, leaving Alexandria one point behind at 64-63.  Erik Hedstrom tipped the rebound to Colton Roderick at the top of the key and he delivered a pass to Sansted for another 3-point look.  This time, Sansted nailed it, lifting the Cardinals to the win.

Kobe Jenson led Alexandria with 15 points and 7 rebounds.  He also blocked five shots.  Hedstrom and Roderick added 13 and 12 points, respectively, Carter Steffensmeier contributed 11 and Sansted finished with 8.

Mr. Basketball finalist Lamar Grayson led Richfield with 22 points, while junior guard Mitchell January scored 17 and junior forward Jaden Wollmuth added 15.  Richfield ends the season with a record of 16-5.

Alexandria takes a 22-1 record into their first state championship game appearance since 1943.  They will face a Minnehaha Academy (19-1) team that eliminated DeLaSalle 79-58 in the other Class AAA semifinal game.  The title game will be played at 6:00pm Saturday at Target Center.
