Lady Spartans Claim Region XIII Title

Sabrina Fronning (14 points, 18 rebounds, 8 assists,  steals) turned in a Championship Game MVP performance on Saturday afternoon at M State in Fergus Falls, leading the lady Spartans to a 73-62 win over Riverland in the NJCAA Division III Region XIII title game.

M State scored the first nine points of the game, taking a 24-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  They increased their lead to 19 points late in the second quarter and led 44-31 at the half.  They maintained their 13 point lead through three quarters,leading 57-44 and held off a fourth quarter comeback attempts by the lady Blue Devils that saw them close the gap to six points, winning by eleven.  The lady Spartans never trailed in the game.

Emily Larson joined Fronning with a double-doubles (16 points, 10 rebounds) of her own, while Jayna Gronewold led the way with 23 points while adding 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.  Kalista Aamot delivered 12 points and 8 rebounds off the bench.  Abby Tysdal snared 8 boards and Lindsey Kurz contributed 6 points and 5 rebounds.

M State held a 59-47 edge on the boards and shot 38.5% (30-78) for the game.

Riverland made only 29.6% (21-71) of their shots from the field.  They were led by Cayli Miles (22 points, 8 rebounds), Imani Colon (16 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists) and Jade Love (15 points).

M State ended their season with a record of 7-7, including a 4-0 mark against the lady Blue Devils.

First year Head Coach Jodi Holleman was named the Region XIII Coach of the Year.

"I feel absolutely blessed to have had the opportunity to coach this classy group of girls," commented Coach Holleman.  "They always played with a ton of heart and hustle and showed so much improvement throughout the season.  I would like to thank President Carrie Brimhall, Dean Matt Borcherding, AD Jason Retzlaff, and AD Steve King for all their hard work to make this season happen.  This season was all about mental toughness and resiliency and this Spartan team definitely showed that the entire season."
