Senior Greta Tollefson scored 21 of her game-high 30 points in the second half, as the Pelican Rapids girls basketball team retained their Section 8AA Crown, and a return trip to the State Tournament following a 52-46 championship game victory Thursday night over Fergus Falls in Perham. It was a repeat of a year ago when the two teams met at Concordia College and the unbeaten Vikings edged the Otters.

The Otters opened scoring as Ellie Colbeck drained a 17-footer. The Vikings countered as Anna Stephenson scored inside. Colbeck answered with her second basket before Pelican Rapids opened up a 14-9 lead. Tori Ratz scored from behind the arc to begin a 13-0 run for the Otters and a 22-14 advantage at the 3:00 mark. The Vikings came back to knot the contest 22-22 at halftime, with a Greta Tollefson basket and 3's from Ellie Welch and Stephenson.

At the break, Tollefson totaled 9 points and Stephenson 7 to lead the Vikings who made 40% (8-20) of their attempts from the floor. The Otters got the majority of their scoring from Colbeck who had 15. Fergus Falls made just 9-of-29 shots for 31%.

Fergus Falls began the second half breaking the tie on Paige Pearson's 3-point play and later opened a 35-30 lead with 12 minutes to go following a three-ball from Ratz and Colbeck's driving lay-up. Chloe Paulson then scored for Pelican Rapids before Anna Anderson's rebound basket and trey opened up a 40-32 lead for the Otters with 9:01 to go. Pelican cut that lead in half before Colbeck scored from behind the arc making the Fergus lead 43-36 at the 8:00 mark. The Otters had a couple of possessions to expand the lead, but could not. With just under six minutes to go, 7th-grader Morgan Korf followed with what may have been the biggest basket of the game, as she connected from 3-point range, pulling the Vikings within four, at 43-39. Another trey, this time from Tollefson, made it a one-point game, as she took over adding another basket and 4 free-throws for 9 consecutive points, giving Pelican Rapids a 48-43 lead with under two minutes to go. Colbeck pulled the Otters within to at 48-46 with her 4th trey of the game, but could get no closer as the Vikings closed out the contest at the free-throw line.

Fergus Falls actually outshot Pelican Rapids from the field, 18-16, but could only make 31% on 18-of-57 shooting. Ellie Colbeck was the only Otter in double figures with 28 points. The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak for Fergus Falls, as the Otters season comes to an end with a final record of 18-4.

Pelican Rapids connected on 16-of-34 field goal attempts for 47% and were led by Tollefson's game-high 30 points and 11 from Stephenson. Winners of 14 consecutive games, the Vikings will take a record of 20-1 to next weeks opening round of the State Tournament. Their opponent and game location is yet to be determined, but the site could be either the "Hive" in Perham or Alexandria High School, with the opponent determined following seeding.

"Always tough to have a season come to an end," said Fergus Falls Head Coach Brad Strand.  "The Otters struggled shooting the ball tonight and did not attack very well which resulted in us only having 3 free throw attempts.  We will greatly miss our six seniors and thank them for the terrific leadership all season.  Practice was always fun with this team and we have had so many great memories.  We are very thankful we were able to play 22 games this year and keep all of our girls healthy."
