The Fergus Falls Otter boys basketball team won for the 7th straight time and advanced to the Section 8AA title game as they defeated Warroad 61-38 on their home court Wednesday night. Perham will be the Otter's opponent for Friday night's Championship game at Pelican Rapids after the Yellowjackets downed HOL Conference rival Barnesville 55-40 in the other Semi-Final.

Fergus Falls had met Warroad in the tourney quarter-finals a year ago, with the Otters coming out on top 62-45, but the game was much closer than the final score would indicate as the Warriors proved to be a very tough opponent.

Warroad would open scoring as Evan Grover scored inside and enjoyed an early 4-0 lead following a Virgil Laznicka basket. The Otters got on the scoreboard when Dominic Aguilar stole the ball in Warroad's offense end and drove in for a lay-up. He added a pair of baskets later from behind the arc with the second giving Fergus Falls an 8-7 advantage. The Otters led 12-7 before Warroad's Grover made one of two free-throws to knot the contest at 16-16. Both teams experienced a scoring drought in the middle of the half, unable to find the basket for several minutes. The Otter's went on a mini 7-0 run to lead 23-16 before the Warriors scored to end the half, down 23-18.

Fergus Falls made just 9-of-24 shots in the opening half for 38%, while Warroad was cooler making only 31% (8-26). Aguilar had 10 points at the break for the Otters and Kyle Thompson with 7 for the Warriors.

Fergus Falls got the spark to really get them going and give them major separation as Luke Newman went to work scoring on several cuts to the basket and adding a couple of free-throws as the Otters began the half on a 19-2 run, taking a commanding 42-20 advantage. The lead was as much as 26 (52-26), when Chance Fazio scored inside, one of his five second-half baskets.

The Otters again received balanced scoring with Newman and Aguilar scoring 14 points each. Fazio added 12, along with a dozen rebounds and 5 blocks, and Abel Aho had 10. The Warriors Thompson led all scorers with 19 and Laznicka chipped in with 9.

Warroad would finish the contest making 16-of-51 attempts for 31% with Fergus Falls nailing 51% on 26-of-51 shooting.

Fergus Falls improves to 14-7 while Warroad ends their season with a 17-3 mark.

It will be a rematch/replay of last years championship game at Concordia College between Fergus Falls and Perham that was never played due to the Covid Pandemic. Fergus Falls added the Yellowjackets to their schedule this year, with the Otters coming out on top 48-43 back on March 6 in Fergus Falls.
