Viking Girls Advance to 6A Title Game with Overtime Win Over Trojans

Pelican Rapids earned their 13th straight victory when they battled the Barnesville Trojans in an overtime contest in the Section 8AA Girls Basketball semifinals on Tuesday night, posting a 46-39 win as they advance to the championship game against Fergus Falls on Thursday in Perham.

The teams exchanged six point runs to start the game and the lead changed hands five times on the night as neither team was able to get on a run.  Pelican Rapids led 19-18 at the half and the game was even at 35-35 at the end of regulation.  Leading by two points with 40 seconds to go, the Vikings committed a turnover that led to Barnesville scoring the tying basket.  Another Pelican Rapids turnover setup a game winning 3 point attempt by the Trojans that missed, forcing the overtime session.

Barnesville scored the first two points of OT, however, Pelican Rapids finished on an 11-2 run, making 9-of-10 free throws in the period.  Anna Stephenson was 6-for-6 from the line and scored 8 of her 22 points in overtime.  Overall she made 9-of-11 foul shots in the game.  She also had 6 rebounds and 4 assists.  Greta Tollefson recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Allie Haiby pulled down 5 boards for the lady Vikings.

Barnesville was led by 7 points each from Samantha Passa and Lexi BolgreanLauren Halvorson added 6 points and 8 rebounds, Kenzie Skogen scored 6 points and Emily Smith finished with 4 points and 8 boards.

The Vikings (19-1) will try to defend the Section title they won a year ago when they play Fergus Falls (18-3) in a rematch of that contest at 7:00pm Thursday in Perham.

Barnesville ends their season with a final record of 13-6.
