Spartan Men Earn First Win, Ladies Game Cancelled

M State shot 43.6% (24-55) from the field on Wednesday night, making 44% (11-25) of their 3-point shots on the way to their first victory of the season.  The Spartans led 33-27 at halftime and went on to post a 62-59 win over Minnesota West from Worthington.

Minnesota West held their only lead of the game at 4-3 with 16:50 left in the first half.  Once the Spartans took the lead at 5-4 they never trailed, leading by as many as 11 in the first half and holding a 13 point lead at one time in the second half.

M State had three players in double figures, led by Tyrell Ross-Childs with 20 points.  He also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a blocked shot.  Point guard Renell Edwards had a big night, scoring 13 points, collecting 7 rebounds, distributing 6 assists and coming up with 5 steals, while only committing 1 turnover.  Nic Pearson added 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Keitric Barber, JR led the Bluejays with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while blocking 3 shots.  Dallas Wiliams also had 12 points and Ty’Shawn Bryant finished with 11 points and 5 boards.  Cornelius Wright had a team high 4 assists.  Minnesota West held a 44-27 advantage on the boards, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds.  The Bluejays struggled with their shooting, making only 4-of-23 (17.4%) 3’s and ending up at 35.8% (24-67) overall.

M State (1-4) will travel to Austin for a Saturday afternoon game against Riverland.

The lady Spartans had their game cancelled after receiving news that one of their players had a positive COVID test.  The status of their game on Saturday is unknown at this time.
