The M State lady Spartans won for the first time this season as they held off Riverland for a 56-54 victory on Saturday afternoon in Fergus Falls.  Riverland led 29-22 at the half, however, M State took a 39-36 lead after three and held on for a two point win.

“This was a nice team win,” stated M State Head Coach Jodi Holleman.  “We couldn’t buy a basket in the second quarter and trailed 29-20.  The girls played with a ton of energy in the second half.  Sabrina Fronning held their leading scorer to just five points.”

Ali Kranz registered a huge double-double with 25 points and 17 rebounds to lead the lady Spartans.  Jayna Gronewold had 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.  Fronning contributed 7 points, 5 assists and 3 steals, and Emily Larson came off the bench to chip in 5 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds.  M State shot 33.3% (23-69) in the game and made 8-of-14 free throws.  They held a 45-32 advantage on the boards.

Riverland was led by 20 points from Imani Colon, who also finished with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.  Deaira Keaton added 11 points, Megan Shanahan had 13 rebounds, and Caylie Miles wound up with 9 points and 4 steals.

M State will host Sisseton-Wahpeton in a 5:30 start on Wednesday in Fergus Falls.  The game will be broadcast on Fergus Falls Hit Music Channel 977 and on www.channel977.com.
