The Pelican Rapids girls’ basketball team hosted Heart O’ Lakes Conference rival Breckenridge on Friday night in a battle of two of the top teams in the conference and in Section 8AA. The Vikings jumped out to a 23-8 lead, but the Cowgirls responded with a 10-0 run to pull to within five points at 23-18 and trailed 25-20 at the half. After the Viking scored the first three points of the second half, Breckenridge rattled off nine straight to take a 29-28 lead. There were six lead changes and three times in the second half, but Pelican Rapids was able to record a 43-41 win.
Seventh-grader Morgan Korf hit a pair of free throws with 40 seconds left to give Pelican a 3 point lead and then made 1-of-2 free throws with 15 seconds remaining to make it a 4 point Viking lead. Jude Held scored with 3.5 seconds left to cut the lead to two and then had a good look at the buzzer after a Viking turnover, that hit the back of the rim, preserving the Pelican Rapids victory.
Greta Tollefson (15 points, 5 rebounds), Anna Stephenson (11 points, 6 rebounds) and Korf (8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists) led the Vikings.
Leaders for Breckenridge were Grace Conzemius (15 points, 9 rebounds) and Held (14 points). Cameron Kaehler had a nice second half, producing 5 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Carcie Materi added 3 assists and 4 rebounds.
Each team had 23 rebounds and both teams took good care of the basketball as the Vikings had only 7 turnovers and the Cowgirls had 8.
Pelican Rapids (8-1, 6-0 HOL) is at home against Frazee on Thursday and on Saturday against Hawley.
Breckenridge (6-3, 4-2 HOL) will play at DGF on Thursday and host Frazee on Saturday, February 20.
