New York Mills traveled to Mahnomen to face Mahnomen-Waubun on Saturday afternoon, but the Eagles lost for the first time this season as the Thunderbirds recorded a 73-59 victory to remain undefeated.

“We turned the ball over too much and dug too big a hole in the first half,” stated New York Mills Head Coach Jason Boe.  “We managed to cut the lead to only five points midway in the second, but ran out of steam.  Despite being shorthanded, it was a game we could have won if we limited the mental errors, converted some easy baskets and shot better from the free throw line.”

The Eagles missed a total of 13 free throws in the game.  They played without Tate Olson who is nursing an ankle injury he suffered midway through the second half of Thursday’s game against Verndale.

Leaders for New York Mills were Breck Hensch (18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals), Jonah Johnson (17 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds), Isaiah Laudenbach (8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals), Derin Gaudette (7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 assists), Trey Gilster (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals) and Noah Noffsinger (1 point, 9 rebounds, 5 assists).

New York Mills (3-1) will play at Sebeka on Tuesday night.
