The Pelican Rapids boys’ basketball team got off to a great start on Friday night as they built a 34-18 halftime lead over the Frazee Hornets on the way to a 71-60 victory.

“We came out with great energy and effort on the defensive end of the court tonight which allowed us to jump out to a 23-4 lead to start the game as we played a really solid first half overall,” stated Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud. “We couldn't sustain it in the second half, however, as Jack Courneya got hot offensively and brought the Hornets back to within three points. Free throws were the difference down the stretch as we were able to convert on our opportunities at the line and also had some big offensive rebound put backs on a couple we missed. Once again, there is a lot we can learn from this game moving forward as we navigate the early part of our schedule.”

Leaders for the Vikings were Logan Fahje (20 points, 5 assists), McHale Korf (15 points, 6 assists), Jayden Rutherford (13 points, 5 rebounds) and Liam Sytsma (10 points, 11 rebounds).

Frazee was led by 36 points from Jack Courneya and 10 points from Justin Courneya.

Pelican Rapids (1-1) will travel to Twin Valley on Thursday for a game with Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal.

Frazee (0-3) has a road game at Lake Park against the LPA Raiders on Tuesday night.
