Isaac Johnson and Cole Zierden Combine for 5 Goals and 4 Assists in 8-2 Otter Win

Isaac Johnson netted a hat trick and added a pair of assists, turning in a five point night on Saturday and leading the Fergus Falls boys’ hockey team to an 8-2 victory on their home ice over River Lakes.  Cole Zierden added a goal and three assists.  The Otters bombarded the River Lakes net with 41 shots on goal while holding the visitors to 14 shots on the Fergus Falls net.

Zierden setup Johnson for the first goal at 8:04 of the opening period.  Isaac Young made it 2-0 at 9:21 with assists from Landon Thacker and Ian Richards.  Johnson then scored on the power play at 12:55 with Zierden and Andrew Johnson assisting on the goal and giving the Otters a 3-0 lead after one period of play.

River Lakes got their first goal at 4:22 of the second period when Jacob Philippi setup Jayden Scheierl.  Fergus Falls responded by scoring three straight second period goals beginning with Johnson’s third of the game at 9:35, assisted by Matthew Niblock.  Zierden then scored from Isaac Johnson and Thacker at 12:45, and Niblock tallied a goal from Isaac Johnson and Zierden.

Carter Thielke increased the Fergus Falls lead to 7-1 with a goal at 3:22 of the third period which was assisted by Michael DeBrito and Young.  DeBrito added a shorthanded goal at 5:43 from Young and Colton Partain.  River Lakes notched the final goal of the game at 11:52 with Cole Pientka scoring from Joel Sowada and Noah Woelfel.

Sophomore goalie Ben Swanson stopped 12 shots in the Fergus Falls net and River Lakes netminder Drew Tangen stopped 33 shots.

Fergus Falls (1-1) will travel to Sartell on Thursday for a Central Lakes Conference contest.
