The New York Mills boys’ basketball season opened the season with a 77-52 victory over the Henning Hornets on Friday night.  The Eagles held a 37-31 halftime lead but outscored Henning 40-21 over the final 18 minutes to secure the win on opening night.

“It was a nice win for us against a quality team and program,” stated New York Mills Head Coach Jason Boe.  “We were able to wear them down a bit in the second half and pull away.  We still need to get in better game shape and be more disciplined on both the offensive and defensive ends.”

The Eagles hit 56% of their shots and held a 42-27 edge on the boards.  They were led by Tate Olson (27 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists), Isaiah Laudenbach (13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals), Jonah Johnson (12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) and Derin Gaudette (10 points, 6 rebounds).  Breck Hensch contributed 8 points.

Henning was led by Tanner Arndt with 19 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.  He also made 8-of-9 from the free throw line.  The Hornets made 15-of-16 free throws on the night, but shot just 28% (16-56) from the field.  Joe Angell had 12 points and 8 rebounds and Tyson Misegades added 10 points and 4 assists.  Seventh-grader Kale Misegades chipped in 8 points for the Hornets.

Henning will host Rothsay on Tuesday night, while New York Mills plays a 1:30pm game in Frazee on Saturday.
