The Underwood girls’ basketball team finished the first half of their Thursday game with Ashby on a 28 point run to take a 32-5 halftime lead over the Arrows.  The Rockets went on to post a 56-19 victory in the season opener for the defending Little Eight Conference co-champs.

The Arrows turned the ball over 26 times in the game, with 19 of them coming in the first half.

Eleven different players scored for Underwood and the Rockets registered 37 points off the bench, led by Liz Lukken with a team high 12 points.  She also had 5 rebounds and 3 assists.  Brianna Evavold hit 3 3-pointers on the way to a 9 point night, and two players, Ezrah Baker and Josey Bugbee contributed 8 point apiece.  Josey also had 3 assists and 4 rebound, and Mo Bugbee dished out 3 assists.  Brooke Hovland was the leader on the boards with 5 rebounds.

“It was a good start for us,” said Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland.  “We have a good group of girls who love to play defense.”

Junior Celi Nelson led the Arrows with 12 points, including a trio of 3’s.  Nelson and Kyra Aamot led the team with 6 rebounds apiece.

“We knew this would be a tough one to start with,” commented Ashby Head Coach Kip Nelson.  “Brian does a great job with that team.  They know position and anticipate so well.  They really got up and down the court well.  From our perspective, I think we were overwhelmed by the speed of the game.  This was in part due to us being a bit out of shape and I think it was apparent the game was a little too fast for our new players.  Lots of games left.  We’ll keep our heads up and keep learning.”

Underwood has another home game on Saturday when they host New York Mills in a 1:30pm start.

Ashby plays at Rothsay next Tuesday night.
