Kevin Tumberg begins his sixth season as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Wadena-Deer Creek, looking to replace three starters from his 16-11 team of a year ago.  The Wolverines were second in the Park Region Conference as they posted their first season above .500 since the 2008-2009 season, recording the most wins in a season in the past 20 years.  The cupboard isn’t bare though as they return four experienced varsity players to form the nucleus of their 2020-2021 team.

Bereket Loer, Cooper Folkestad and Lucas Hinojos all earned All-Conference or All-Conference Honorable Mention honors last season and Loer had been a starter since his freshman season.  Their loss certainly creates some holes in the rotation.

“There are only four players returning to the varsity roster that played major minutes last year for us, so finding our depth will be something we need to work on as the year goes on,” commented Coach Tumberg.  “Due to that, we will have some inexperienced players getting minutes this season.  We are hopeful they will adapt early and be major assets for our squad.”

Payton Rondestvedt (JR, Guard), Zach Shaw (SR, Guard), Aiden Larson (SR, Guard) and Tony Kreklau (SR, Forward) are the four returning players with varsity experience.

“We will have a very athletic team with a talented group of seniors and a lot of athletic players coming up in the freshman and sophomore classes,” noted Tumberg.  “We will spend a ton of energy on the defensive end in practices this year.  We have the athleticism to run and score with teams, but we need to be able to defend.”

Tumberg, who will be assisted by Alex Brockpahler, Noah Ross and Ryan Nelson, says New York Mills and Pillager should be at the top of the Park Region Conference, while the favorites in Section 8AA are Perham and Fergus Falls.  “There are a lot of teams not too far behind those two in the section,” added Tumberg.
