Ryan Garvin begins his second year as Head Coach of the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy boys’ basketball team with four returning varsity letter winners to lead them.  The Comets will look to improve on an 8-17 overall record and 4-8 Little Eight Conference mark as they take the floor for the 2020-2021 season.

“We lose Thomas Zwiers, who really was the heart and soul of our team, to graduation, and Evan Gould, who came to us from California, is not returning this year as his parents want to keep him closer to home during these uncertain times,” said Coach Garvin.  “We should have a lot of depth at guard this year and we could be pretty quick.  We will have to figure out how to best defend the post area as we will have our work cut out for us in that area.”

Seniors Micah Foss (Guard), Joel Quam (Wing) and Zeke Ihrke (Guard), and junior Sam Brumfield (Guard) all return from last year.

“Micah is one of the most tenacious players I’ve worked with,” shared Garvin.  “He can shoot every shot.  This year he will have to figure out the best time for him to get his own shot versus when to get others involved.  Joel is tough-nosed.  It will be a rarity when someone outworks him.  He’ll have to discover multiple ways of contributing this year, from rebounding to passing to throwing the outlet to setting screens, but he can do all of those things.  Zeke can shoot the rock really well. He will have to handle the basketball for us to give our other guards breaks.  Sam is an all-around contributor offensively and defensively.  He can shoot the ball from anywhere.  His test will come in how he makes other people around him better.”

Senior Evan Olstad (Wing) and juniors David Stephen-Wangboje, Zayne Weinrich and Caden Fischer will also be looked to for varsity contributions.

Garvin says Parkers Prairie will be the favorite in the Little Eight Conference, while West Central Area and Hancock are the teams to beat in the Pheasant Conference.  His top picks for Section 6A are West Central Area, Parkers Prairie, Hancock and Ulen-Hitterdal.
