Tyler Owen is in his first year as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Battle Lake High School.  Randy Dorn and Mike Scholten will serve as his assistants as the Battlers look to improve on a 12-11 season of a year ago.

“A lot of younger players gained varsity experience last year,” noted Owen. “There is no doubt that this season will be one to remember.  Summer workouts were shortened due to COVID 19, and with a new coach the team will have to do a lot of learning in a very short amount of time.”

Returning starters include seniors Brady VanErp (Guard) and Kayne Cameron (Forward/Center), and sophomore Drew Johnson (Guard/Forward).  Other returning letter winners are seniors Drew Durbin (Forward/Center), Nick Carter-Fischer (Forward), sophomores Bricker Bladow (Guard) and Owen Buehler (Forward), and freshman Jack Mekalson (Guard).  Coach Owen also expects junior Noah Mansker (Forward/Center) to compete for varsity playing time.

“We have a strong group of senior players who are not only good basketball players, but great leaders,” added Coach Owen.  “They will need to set the pace this season and encourage the younger players to keep up.  What the Battlers lack in size they make up for in heart.  Several players have proven their willingness to rebound with tenacity, dive on the floor for loose balls to gain possessions for their team, and do the little things that not everyone is willing to do.”

Owen sees Ashby, Parkers Prairie and Brandon-Evansville as the teams to beat in the Little Eight Conference.
