The Hancock girls’ basketball team won their first nine games last season and finished the year with nine straight wins also.  In between they were 4-7, finishing the year with a 22-7 overall record and a 9-2 mark in Pheasant Conference.  The good news for the Owls is they didn’t lose any players from that team.

“We are looking to build off a strong 2019-2020 season, but know it will not be easy,” commented fourth year Head Coach Tony Thielke.  “Due to gym resurfacing and COVID 19 restrictions our gym was closed the entire summer, so it has been sometime since our team has had the opportunity to go up and down the floor.  I know everyone is looking forward to getting the opportunity to play and have a season.  With that being said, it will be important to keep everyone healthy and be ready to go each and every night.”

Seniors Alexis Staples (Guard, All-Conference) and Morgan Kisgen (Guard), and juniors Tori Pahl (Post, All-Conference), Carlee Hanson (Guard/Forward, All-Conference) and Rylee Hanson (Forward/Post, All-Conference) are the returning starters.  Other returning letter winners are Lindsey Mattson (Guard) and Jenna Kannegiesser (Guard).

“We return pretty much everyone, plus build on another year of age for ninth-graders Kaitlyn Staples (Guard) and Misti Zempel (Forward),” said Coach Thielke. “Both of these girls gave us some important minutes down the stretch, plus we will also have some eight-graders that will be competing for some varsity time.  We have a great group of young ladies both on and off the floor.  I am excited to get back to playing basketball and watching these girls continue to work hard to reach individual and team goals.”

Ryan Snyder will serve as assistant coach.

Thielke sees West Central Area, Underwood and Henning as the top teams in Section 6A.
