The Pelican Rapids Wrestling team will have 18 letter winners returning from last year, being led by Johnny Ziebell (3rd in Section at 170), Jacob Willits (3rd in Section at 285) and Sebastian Centeno (3rd in Section at 138).  The Vikings will have 5 seniors, 1 junior, 6 sophomores, 4 freshmen and 2 eighth-grade letter winners on the squad.

“One of our goals is to be one of the top four teams in the sections again this year, so we can host an opening round match of the team tournament,” stated long time Head Coach Harold Holt.  “With COVID moving the season back six weeks, we as coaches and wrestlers are excited that we are going to have a season.  Wrestlers and coaches have always been concerned about skin issues, this year we will also have to be vigilant about COVID protections.  Some of the things we have done in the past will make us better prepared for this season.”

Seniors Noah Kapenga (5th in Section at 182), Tommy Thach (6th in Section at 126) and Mark LaPoint (132) and sophomores Carter Johnson (4th in section at 132), Oakley Carson (6th in Section at 120), Jedd Carlson (106) and Reece Henkes (113) also have extensive varsity experience.

Other wrestlers coming into the season with some varsity experience last year are sophomores Daniel Diaz and Troy Bell, freshmen Parker Sanchez, Abraham Gonzalez, Carter Freking and Phillip Dykhoff, and eighth-graders Jack Kapenga and Mark Kapenga.

“Staying healthy and injury free will be a key,” said Coach Harold Holt.  “We do not have a lot of depth and if the wrong wrestler is out of the lineup it could hurt the team’s performance.”

Holt says Perham and Frazee are the top teams in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference, while Ottertail Central, West Central Area and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale-Parkers Prairie are his picks as Section 6A favorites.

Holt will be assisted by Dylan Evenson, Aaron Kapenga and Carlos Gutierrez.
