Last season saw the Rothsay girls’ basketball team record 11 wins, their most in the last 15 years, as they finished 11-17 overall and 5-7 in the Little Eight Conference.  Big wins against quality programs like Thief River Falls, Brandon-Evansville and New York Mills highlighted the season for the Tigers.  They lost Conference MVP Jayna Gronewold and All-Conference player Jenna Fabre to graduation, however, with six returning players with extensive varsity experience the Tigers expect to be competitive again this season.

“We are going to focus more on the defensive end of the floor this year,” said Head Coach Anita Heier, now in her sixth year at Rothsay.  “Last year we gave up 59 points per game to our opponents.  We are going to work hard to cut that number down this year.  If we can play good defense and rebound, we will be competitive in every game we play.  We have great leadership and a great group of positive players.  These girls really enjoy the game, which makes it fun for everyone involved.”

Grace Lider (SR, Guard), Abby Honer (JR, Post), Kenadi Carlsrud (SO, Forward), Madison Tillman (SO, Forward), Summer Wigdahl (JR, Post) and Chase Balken (JR, Guard) all return.  Elli Meyer (FR, Guard) and Katie Reber (SO, Post) will also be in the mix.  Lider and Honer will serve as team captains.

Madison Honer and Nikki Thorson will serve as assistant coaches for the Tigers.

“Underwood, Parkers Prairie and Brandon-Evansville all have well-coached programs and they all continue to be the teams to beat in both the Little Eight Conference and Section 6A,” said Heier.
